( the thing about this ability going haywire, about it turning into something it shouldn't something that it could be, if she tried, but she won't, so why bother speaking of it, is that it taps into all the things that shouldn't be heard. things that, when it was just her and Marc sharing this, could be blocked by either of them. they had total control over what was said between them.

now she just hears snippets of things, sends out bits and pieces when they shouldn't be.

and then there's this. which she reacts to too quickly, too immediately, to pretend it never hit her mind in the first place. )

( there's never really been a time in his life that he hasn't thought that his thoughts were safe. that they were his own, and no one else's, because what would end up happening if all the guilt he tends to carry around on a regular basis were let out into the open?

( he really has gotten better about it. he's learned to let things go. but between himself and dean, there is always going to be something to feel guilty about. they go back and forth, take turns, and it's a never-ending cycle.

and he really isn't expecting this. not by a long shot. )

( Sam. Sam. look at your lies, look at your choices. she's quite literally been given a direct line into your head. how does lying seem like a good idea?

(for what it is worth, Kate doesn't want it and there's a very sincere flinch of guilt that comes through at having this happen at all. this power is one she, for all intents and purposes, called dead. it was never supposed to, never going to work after Marc died, right?

( lying always seems like a good idea when you're pretty sure the truth will get you even more into trouble than the lie will. and the truth of it is he's not a good liar; never has been, never will be, but that doesn't keep him from trying in the first place. especially when he thinks he's doing the right thing.

protip: lying is never the right thing. and the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

there's a small moment in which he pauses, weighing his options. he doesn't want to lie to her - never wants to lie to her - but this is something that had come between him and his brother, something that they still have to find a way to get past.

not that they don't always find a way past the things that get in their way, but this ... is something new altogether.

it's not every day that you opt not to tell your older brother that you were mercy-killed by a god because you were taken over by the spirit of a wendigo. ( which should, at this point, be par for the course. but one can never be too sure. ) )

( I kind of lied to Dean about something that happened before he got here. Er - a lie by omission. He isn't happy. )

the silence on her end is drawn out, partially for thought - it takes a moment to place the memories of that night in her old flat, discussing all the things they'd done wrong, how a certain lie by omission cropped up - and partially because, well, work happens in the way work is wont to do.

(that might be a good thing. might give her - them - a few minutes to think about responses and do, say, think the right thing.

as ever, the thought of what would Faith say flits through her head. Kate's never been good at the saying the right thing crap. but she's trying.)

honestly? she kind of assumed they would have talked about it after that night in her flat. but apparently not (and how can she, of all people, judge anyone for not explaining something, when this resurrection is dragging out one of the several things she's avoided mentioning because it isn't relevant?
